Understanding Civil Rights and Diversity in Our Classroom 2

My students need a variety of books including Owning It, The Hunger Games series, and kindle tablets to help understand diversity and related research.

My Students

Every person is diverse and unique in their own way. My students need to understand that they too are diverse and unique. This project will give them a chance to celebrate their diversity and learn about what makes people special in their own way.

I teach troubled 7th graders in the heart of the Bronx.

They are unaware of how their actions and words can hurt a person. They use the "B" and "N" words constantly to hurt and insult anyone who disagrees with them. They also bully other children based on being different. With the books "Owning It", and "the Hunger Games Series," the students will be able to learn about diversity and acceptance with fiction literature based on readings that the children are enjoying today. The tablets would allow the students to research the topic of diversity and Civil Rights as a small group at their desks. The students will then create a project based on the information they researched via books and tablet.

My Project

These resources will allow my classroom to have fun while using creative resources so that they can learn about diversity, civil rights, bullying, and cultural differences. One of the resources is a book about diversity is called "Owning It". This book will teach the students how to be comfortable with their disabilities and with other people with disabilities. The Hunger Games books will allow the student to imagine what what a world would be like when diversity is stifled. The tablets will allow us to work on exit projects related to cultural diversity and anti-bullying. These resources will allow them to have plenty of materials for different stations to teach kids about different cultures, diversity and civil right issues as well as bullying.

Your donations will help students access information.

The more information that students have about a topic, the better they will be able to share and discuss information around that topic. It is my goal to create a space for discussion. The addition of books and tablets will be used as a research tool to support this venture. With students able to explore a variety of websites, they can better link the past to the present and share their new and deepened understandings with other students.
