Uncovering Our State History

My students need a model of the earth, a geology demonstration kit, a fossil identification kit, a wide variety of fossil and mineral samples, copies of 5 different picture books and a set of fossil identification guides.

I want to help my 4th graders uncover the rich history of our state and provide hands-on, motivating experiences for the wide range of learners that I work with daily.

Social Studies and science are the favorite subjects of many of my students. They find the history of our state interesting and they ask many questions about what the land was like in the past. We explore changes to the earth in science and the early environment and people of our state in social studies. In the past I have always taught science and social studies in isolation. This project will allow me to integrate the two areas through interactive experiments and demonstrations and make these two subject areas even more engaging for my students.

To teach the students about changes to the earth and early state history I want to use a model of the earth and a geology demonstration kit. These two materials will help me to build basic knowledge of the layers of the earth and the processes that lead to change, both rapid and slow. We will use picture books to explore the Ice Age and the effect of glaciers on our state. We will also integrate science and social studies by looking at fossils and learning what they can tell us about life in the past. I want to show them fossils of materials which were once in our state such as horn coral and crinoids. In addition the students will have the chance to practice identifying fossils using a kit and field guides. Once the excitement about the past builds we will then move into our study of the first people in our state. During this part of our study we will use picture books to learn what archaeologists do and use a variety of items found in mounds such as chips of mica and shark teeth to simulate the trading of early people and to create plots for excavation. This exciting study will also include the students using clay to make spear points and effigy mounds to help them trace the development

Your support of this project will enable me to integrate two subjects in order to show the connection between the changes to the earth and the organisms living on it. These materials will allow me to provide concrete, hands-on demonstrations and activities which will bring social studies and science out of the textbook and into the classroom. The fossil samples and guidebooks will encourage the students to begin looking around their area for clues to the past. This type of learning will lead them to asking deeper questions and discovering answers. Your funding will make it possible for those "What ifs?" and "Whys?" to be answered and explored in an engaging manner.
