Tye Dye....Nah...Chromatography!

My students need Sharpies, rubbing alcohol, cups, and rubber bands to experiment with chromotography while incorporating creative art.

My Students

Do you remember trying to Tye dye for the first time? Did it work? Why or why not? Do you remember what chromatography is? My students are creative and want to integrate art into science while learning about mixtures and solutions.

Our school is a suburb of Greenville, SC.

We are considered high poverty. We believe in kindness and fostering a safe place to learn. Our students love to use their hands to learn and be creative. The opportunities available to explore science and art are not great in numbers outside of school. The students at our school deserve the chance to show their creativity and inquire about mixtures and solutions while Tye dyeing a t-shirt and/or pillowcases.

My Project

The students will use the requested materials to experiment with chromatography and learn how a solvent and solute work together. They will build first hand knowledge of how chromatography works while learning about the primary and secondary colors. The students will be creating their own designs on 100% cotton t-shirts that they will bring from home.

Our students will be able to create an art piece, explain and understand what chromatography is, and have a 5th Grade "team" t-shirt to wear at our special events through out the year.

The donations will give the students an opportunity to explore science and art using their hands!
