Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Don't let my students spend another year saying, "reading is boring," Help my 10th graders, many of whom test 4-5 years below grade level, find the joy of a story they can relate to. Help me place the first book they ever enjoyed independently in their hands.

My inner city students face the kinds of struggles on a daily basis that powerful fiction is made of.

Poverty, fear, violence, heart break, loss and incredible resilience despite it all. They live in one of the densest, poorest communities in our state. With education dollars dwindling, class sizes are up and second chances are disappearing. I don't want to let the 120 sophomores at our school head into their junior year without being confident and able independent readers. In many years of experience, I have had the most success turning kids into readers when I can find the right high interest book to place in their hands and then give them some time and encouragement to read it. However, I desperately need to replenish my classroom library.

My Project

Most of the books on this list are tried and true. I've watched reluctant readers pick them up dubiously and finish them within a week saying, "that's the only book I ever got into, Miss. Do you have any more like that?" My students will learn to see themselves as readers instead of non-readers. They will also know that there are books out there for them.

While independent reading is not the be all and end all to the education gap, there is no doubt that it is a prominent piece of the puzzle.

I cannot promise you that these books will still be in my shelves in year or two- with a high transiency rate books leave the shelf and sometimes don't come back. But I can promise you they will be read and passed along to other students with the words- "check this one out."
