This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Music is the universal language of mankind," Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, and my students want to take an exciting musical journey around the world!

I teach general music in an inner city public school in Indiana.

Our school has almost 800 students who fortunately still have art, music, or physical education sometime during the day. We are a Title I school where every kindergarten through 8th grade student has free breakfast and lunch! Ten classes walk through my door daily: five in the morning and five in the afternoon. Every child has a different "story" but all have something in common: they are eager to learn! My students are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. They come to music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, choreograph movement to a song, write a rap, work on a composer project, take tests, and write thank you letters to donors from DonorsChoose.org!

My Project

Song! Dance! Rhythm! Music IS the universal language! My students want to take a musical journey around the globe so that they can become familiar with the cultures of far away lands! Imagine learning an Israeli circle dance, the German Schottische, the Brazilian Samba, or an African welcome dance! What fun we'd have learning the song, "Hoya Hoye," a traditional children's song from Ethiopia. It's a great example of a call and response pattern which is found in much of the music of Africa. Thanks to Donors Choose, our music room now has DRUMS! The "World Music Drumming" curriculum would teach basic drumming technique, and we know that drumming IS the heartbeat of cultures. The power of this curriculum will transform lives, build community, and teach respect and cooperation! My students will learn how other children express themselves through music in different parts of the world. There's nothing better than having FUN while learning at the same time!

We want to learn WHO our neighbors are, WHERE they live, WHY they sing and dance, HOW their music and rhythms sound, and WHEN they have celebrations with song, dance, and rhythm!

These Cd's will give my students the opportunity to discover the music of the world. They will use the laptop to research the countries we visit, and they will play folk songs on the bells. We hope you will consider helping us make this musical trip around the world! Thank you!
