"Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers." ~Isaac Asimov
I want to help my students begin thinking through their fingers and learning to love writing!
I teach children with mild to severe special needs in a combination TK/Kindergarten Special Day Class in a high-poverty school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students' qualifying conditions include Mild to Severe Intellectual Disability, Autism, Speech/Language Disorder, and Specific Learning Disability. Many of my students have emerging speech, some do not talk, and I have a few who speak in short phrases. While my students may have learning handicaps, they still have a desire to learn that is inherent in young children, and they just need the right tools to help them be successful. However, there are materials that my school just cannot provide due to cost and limited school budgets.
My Project
The items I have requested will allow my students to develop their pre-writing skills, participate in writing exercises while in small or whole group, and share what they know and have created during circle time. The paper storage units will help to store our journals and the assorted papers used during writing time. By using the Printing Practice Cards with the Magic Boards we already have, my students will be able to practice making lines and curves to form letters and numbers without the worry of marking themselves, their friends, or the rug during circle time. The Writing Prompts Journals will allow them to respond to prompts by tracing the beginning of the sentence and copying one of the given words supported by a picture.
With your help, my special needs kindergarten students will be able to practice pre-writing skills and develop into the writers that they should be by the end of the year.
Please help my students become proud writers by thinking through their fingers!
