Tinker Tuesday

My Students

My classroom is full of scientists who love to explore through creative investigations, technology, and projects. I want my students to see science in the world around them in their everyday lives. "Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." Carl Sagan

My students are amazing.

They are so excited to be in the science room. Whether we are designing investigations to study the search pattern of ants, creating cartoons that share our learning, or diving into text to learn content, my students are thrilled to question the world and events around them. The fifth graders love to integrate technology as much as they love to cut up cardboard to design model robotic hands. I have all 115 students throughout the day, and I appreciate the enthusiasm and curiosity they bring to the learning. My school is so supportive to learning science through hands-on investigation. The staff and administration is very helpful in supporting my students in all their crazy ideas and fun! The learning is always celebrated and promoted.

My Project

I would love to use these materials in a Tinker Tuesday event. Each Tuesday, students would have access to these kits to explore energy and the engineering design process. They would be able to integrate recycled materials to build, share, and disassemble to build again. Along with other materials to "tinker" with, students could extend the class learning in an even more self-directed manner. Tinker Tuesday would incorporate other materials such as the regular science lab materials and various equipment from around the school and classroom. The activities that these kits will support are all related to creativity, exploratory design, and extending the understanding of energy conversions. Ultimately, I want students to understand the inner workings of the electronics that support our daily lives. LittleBits equipment help build that understanding.

Wow...to have this equipment available for students to work with would be amazing.

So frequently, I want to have students work with electronics kits, but there are problems with finding developmentally appropriate materials that are in good condition. These kits are designed for small hands, big ideas, and creative minds! Tinker Tuesday would be a great experience for students.
