Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"School gardens are a wonderful way to use the schoolyard as a classroom, reconnect students with the natural world, and the true source of their food . . ." ~GreenHeart Education
The majority of our students are from low income households.
As a result, they have had few gardening experiences. When they know they're going to the garden to work and learn, they light up like Christmas trees. Learning and working in the garden provides them with practical experience that can be taken with them for a lifetime of sustainability.
My Project
Our 4th-6th grade students will use the hoes and shovels to clean out the garden from the weeds that have grown up over the rainy season. The will then use them to prepare the soil and to build their raised planter beds for this growing season. Once the vegetables have been planted, they will use the shovels and hoes to maintain them over the growing season. Additionally, the fertilizer stakes will provide the missing nutrients that the soil lacks to produce vibrant, healthy fruits and vegetables for our students and their families to enjoy.
We will begin planting seedlings in the next couple of weeks.
Some students will be volunteering with parents and local community volunteers to maintain the garden over the summer. Returning to school in August with a vibrant, healthy, and rich vegetable garden would be an amazing experience for them. Harvesting their crops and celebrating with a feast will create a lifetime of memories.
