My students need to use their hands to create. Creation breeds innovation. We need K'NEX, erector sets, markers, origami paper, Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoy, crayons, andtape, things that help students disconnect to reconnect.
My library? NOT the typical library! There is noise (gasp)! There is movement (oohhhh)! There needs to be CREATION! In addition to the books and literacy that I love, I feel that the students need to create in order to extend their own learning. You can help us meet this goal!
I have students from kindergarten to grade four.
They come to the library for an hour a week for library lessons, books, and fun. I love that the library is the one place that students are limited in no way. Our kids are creative! They are innovative, and they need to be engaged in order to be successful. A place that they can be creative without being graded, a place that they can make things without worrying about whether it is "right" or "wrong"...that's what I want for them!
My Project
In the library, we will have areas where they can check out these "creation" items. They can check them out as pairs or in groups or individually. We will have many different choices of items, so that the kids can pick what speaks to them.
Students can using erector sets and K'NEX to create stories that we can film and produce online! They will be using origami paper and craft supplies to make props and create photo-picture books! I want for them to use "how-to" books to create neat things with art supplies! These are all skills that will transfer to the real world, learned in a safe, non-judgmental place...our library. My hope is that this encourages the kids to come into the library for more than just the wonderful books, but also for brain building, heart pounding, pride inducing CREATION!
I'm hoping that kids will learn more about themselves through this project.
I imagine them going home and saying, "Guess what we did in library today?" and adding conversation around the dinner table! I pray that kids put down the technology that is glued to their hands and begin playing with Legos, Tinkertoy, erector sets. I want them to change their gift lists to include things like origami paper and craft items. I want kids to get back to the basics of fun, and involve their parents too!
