My Students
I try to provide a literacy rich environment for my students. One of my goals is for every student to be able to walk into my room and not dread reading. One way that I try to accomplish this is to try and provide a variety of books that are of interest to them and that they are capable of reading.
Every year I have a large variety of students.
I have students that come from home where they have everything and then I have students that come from homes where they have very little. All of my students are capable of learning and enjoy learning. Some are harder to motivate than others but the trick is never to give up and to find out what makes them want to learn and do better. I also have ELL's in my classroom. Students that come from a home where English is either their second or third language or not spoken at all.
My Project
Guided reading benefits everyone! The advantages it has for every reader is that it can establish fundamental skills necessary for proficient reading, identify weaknesses and strengthen specific skills, improve attention to detail
build fluency, expands vocabulary knowledge and develops reading comprehension skills. To do this and reach the needs of my students I need to have books that students can use and have access to over a long period of time.
After reading and being instructed in a book, students need to keep books in their book boxes to practice fluency and practice what they learned independently. Having sets of guided reading books is a necessary resource to move students to the next level and provide them with the best instruction.
This donation would bring my guided reading lessons to the next level.
Students don't get the necessary time to practice & become fluent in familiar just right books. I think by starting my own collection of guided reading books I will be able to have a variety of good books for my students to use and feel successful in. This in return will help them be more positive about reading. I believe that with a positive attitude they will be able to be more successful & be able to reach their own goals.
