Therapeutic Horseback Riding Lessons for Class with Autism

My students need Therapeutic Horseback riding to improve their impairments in academic, communication, social and play skills, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors.

My Students

My class is K-5th grades, 1-1 para-support staff, 6 students who may have one or all of the following: motor control challenges, lack of functional communication, cognition, social skills, and interactive play deficits. We are a low economic area, and I am looking for unique options for my special class.

I am looking to get my students involved in HIPPOTHERAPY so they can advance along in their deficit areas.

I want my students to have every opportunity that I can find for them to obtain the education and life skills they need to obtain their full potential. My school is in a low-social economic area, with high poverty. My school is a typical mix of students from kindergarten to fifth grade. My school wants the best for each and every student, which includes my special class of students with AUTISM. This is the first year for my class at this public school and they have opened their hearts and minds to the challenges that I face each day with providing a personally unique education for each of my students. The parents are embracing the challenging of early mornings for long bus rides to this new location, new environment, new teacher and new school family. We have seen amazing growth already this school year, I hope to get this amazing program going for this year and many more.

My Project

This opportunity is a chance for us to get out of the classroom. Explore HIPPOTHERAPY with the hopes of advancing in the following four domains: include communication, daily living skills, socialization, and motor skills with respective subdomains of receptive communication, expressive communication, written communication, personal, domestic and community living skills, interpersonal relationships, play and leisure time, coping skills, and fine and gross motor skills. The social opportunities provided in the HPOT setting could enhance receptive communication, because participants practice attending, comprehending, and completing instructions provided by their therapists during turn taking, planning, and sequencing activities.

This unique experience has been shown in studies that children with ASD begin to listen, attend to others and communicate by using receptive communication that has been difficult for them before.

Children who improve sensorimotor function, may be more willing to engage in everyday activities that have been challenging in the past, which opens them to other learning areas. For my class to get this unique field trip will open many possible avenues for them which we cannot even begin to predict.
