Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school NEEDS their hands in the dirt! We know that learning happens best when it is hands on. We want to start our garden to provide our students with a cross-curriculum, hands on approach to the wonderful world of agriculture through outdoor learning activities.
Thelma Richardson Elementary is a brand new school in an urban community.
Our kids love learning, playing and getting dirty! Many of our students have not had the experience of growing a garden. As a campus, we want to give our students the opportunity to learn how to grow plants and all that is needed to sustain a garden. We are very excited to not only grow plants, but to grow future generations of agriculturists!
My Project
With a compost tumbler, soil, ladybug habitat, hose, and other resources, our students will be able to create a functional gardening ecosystem. By planting plants, vegetables, and herbs, students will learn that it takes more than just sun and water to produce a functional community of plants. Composting and the lady bug farm will give them an understanding of organic ways to take care of and grow plants.
This project will improve our classrooms by helping make a real life connection between nature and math, science, and language arts.
Students will understand the time and dedication it takes to produce quality vegetables, herbs and plants. It is our hope that our students not only enhance their academics, but also gain a sense of appreciation for our local farmers.
