Wonder. Every child is born with the gift of wonder. They explore their world to answer questions such as: How does this work?, what happens when...?, and the big question, Why? Unfortunately this can be lost, but I want to help keep it alive in my students.
My Second Graders come from diverse backgrounds, many speaking languages other than English at home, and many classified as special education.
Others live in poverty, while others are latch key kids who come home to an empty house and a screen as a babysitter.
But, they still can find the wonder and beauty of nature when they are given the chance to view it. They have not lost their desire to seek knowledge for knowledge's sake or art for art's sake.
My Project
I am requesting a "World in a Box" set of preserved nature items. These item can be viewed, magnified, through a jeweler's loop. This is a springboard into literacy (writing poetry, or narratives) as well as science (drawing what they see as a scientific illustration) and critical thinking. Looking small helps students think big.
Wonder.
Joy. Excitement. These traits should be with every child as they move through their school career. These are what make the difference between life long learners and those who are not.
Help my students become life long learners, help them to always wonder.
