When I ask my students what medium they would like to use in the art studio this year, the answer is always, undoubtedly, clay. Fortunately, our school just received a brand new kiln for firing ceramics. The problem is that we're lacking the clay and glazes to bring our ceramics program to life.
My art students are a diverse group of 320 learners ranging from ages 3 to 12.
Our District of Columbia Public School is home to students who've either never seen, touched, or smelled clay before, or those who've attended summer art camps since they were three. No matter their level of experience, all students are thirsty for more exposure to the arts, especially in a meaningful and authentic way.
My Project
A ceramics program at our school would change the face of art education forever. The forgiving nature of clay allows students of all ages and abilities to problem solve without fear of failure. Rolling up your sleeves, getting clay underneath your fingernails, making a bit of a mess, and molding a form by hand are simple experiences that connect all people through art making.
Access to clay materials will allow me to jumpstart a ceramics program at my elementary school. In doing so, I plan to teach a unit on the history and tradition of face jugs from Africa to the American South. The expressive nature of these "ugly jugs" will inspire children to think outside of the box and tap into students' vivid imaginations, all while rooting their artistic process in a social and historical context.
Many DC Public Schools do not have the funding to support art classes.
The school I teach at places a high value on art education and it is my goal to make sure the rare opportunity I have to expose children to the arts is not wasted. It is my goal to provide authentic art experiences for my students by using real materials in a studio setting. I hope the exposure to ceramics allows each student to feel successful and contributes to their desire to be lifelong learners and creative citizens.
