Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I love history, and I try to imbue my classes with that love and appreciation. In addition to World History, I teach AP European History and Latin American History as an elective. Many of my former students describe these classes as the highlight of their high school careers.
Our school is a charter in an urban environment, with close to 100% of our students eligible for the free lunch program.
My students are special kids, who have put in work in my class and are due a reward for all of their efforts. These kids are mainly first-generation Americans and are also definitely college-bound. They have been talking about going on this trip since last year. They have been fundraising assiduously, too.
My Project
Every day I teach courses that deal with far-off and interesting locations. Paris... London... places kids at my high school can only dream about. My kids learn wonderful narratives about kings and queens in France and England. They also engross themselves in the details of the World Wars, and the Cold War. This trip will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but will also feature many of the places familiar to kids after studying: Parliament, Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles and other amazing landmarks.
Our planned tour to Europe will help enrich students' education, and also provide them context for many of the issues and details they have learned about in my history courses.
Since many of my students plan on attending a four year university in the future, they can get a sense of international travel for the first time, and maybe even plan for international study, too.
