Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The costumes for our first show were made out of recycled paper - some glued, and some hand stitched - and most fell apart. We need a sewing machine to create the costumes for our 2nd Holiday Spectacular Show. Please help us attain this tool and help the "sew go on," creating beautiful, reusable costumes.

I work in a public primary school in a mainly Hispanic community in New York.

The school has a large ELL population, with many students coming from areas where Spanish is the primary language. As a result, many students are isolated by the language barrier. In addition, my students struggle economically, almost all living at and well below the poverty level. Crime, domestic violence, substance abuse are rampant throughout the neighborhood, leaving many of the children with threatening and unsafe home and community environments. For many, school is a last sanctuary of calm and comfort. Unfortunately, our district does not consider art or music to be high priority subjects. As a result, I teach over 450 students per week with very few supplies. Just recently, I also took on a "Little Kids Rock" music program. Given the intense pressure and sense of powerlessness under which they live their day-to-day lives, having no art/music often means having no voice.

My Project

My students need a sewing machine to create costumes for our school shows. My sewing machine is too heavy for me to carry back and forth from home. A sewing machine at school will enable me to work with my fifth grade fashion students, and a few highly-skilled parent and teacher volunteers to create the much needed costumes for our 2nd Holiday Spectacular Show. The machine will give us the tool to create costumes for any upcoming show. Our teacher volunteers are donating all their time to rehearse and direct this event because it brings forth so much incredible beauty and joy to our school. The handmade costumes will add so much more visual beauty to our school productions - inspiring even more drama!

Your donation will allow our 5th grade fashion designers and some parents and teachers to work together to create simple and elaborate costumes for our theatrical endeavors.

A sewing machine will allow us to create beautiful costumes and expose our school to this beautiful art form ... and our young thespians will look and feel fabulous putting on GREAT performances!
