The Physics in Forensic Science

My students need the dynamics system to apply the concepts of Newton's Laws to real-world accident reconstruction problems.

My Students

We start our class by discussing some of the local and current events related to chemistry and physics. Some discussions always center around car accidents, motorcycle accidents and how can the police officers tell how fast a car was going or figure out who was at fault. They also talk about CSI.

Most of my students come from single parent homes and do not have a chance to travel outside of the community.

Several of the parents work two jobs to support their family and also receive governmental assistance. About half of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We are located in a rural area next to low income housing and in the center of the city limits. We offer a variety of challenging classes on a limited school budget so that our students will have a variety of career options. They are limited in transportation but express a desire to venture outside of their community. They are interested in several of the forensic science shows like CSI, Snapped and Cold Case. They want to understand how science and math help them to solve crimes that occur around the community.

My Project

This project will help students use the laws of physics to reconstruct accidents. After our discussion of the laws of physics including Newton's Laws of Motion and performing the related labs, students will have to analyze videos of car, train and truck accidents to help explain the result of the impact and damage that occurred. Students will simulate the use of the cart system and event data recorder to show how evidence gathered by this device can be used in court. They will also show how accident scenes can be recreated through the analysis of the data that they gathered. Students will determine the speed of the vehicle before brakes were applied and look at the effects of different driving conditions to analyze how speed is related to braking distance of a vehicle. They will prepare expert witness reports that include graphs, detailed drawings and written explanations of the accident.

Students will be able to use math, the laws of physics, and measurement to analyze the components of a accident.

Students will use video, drawings and data to describe the events of an accident and use these to give an expert witness testimony. Students will apply concepts learned in physics class to real-world situations and crimes. Students will learn how distance traveled, velocity and acceleration are related to one another and use data to support their predictions and theories.
