My Students

Each day I remember that my purpose is to give my students opportunity! In an age where writing can be a strange language - bred by text and emails - proper grammar and sentence structure is a valuable tool. Thus instant feedback on the writing and revision process are keys to successful writing.

My 7th graders receive instruction from an Accelerated Middle and High school that places great value on setting and achieving high standards.

All high school graduates have gone on to selective colleges across the country. In addition, our school was the only middle or high school in the county to receive Indiana’s Four-Star School Award in the 2009-2010 school year. Since accelerated pace and rigor are two standards upheld by the school, my students are challenged to master 7th grade and 8th grade expectations in one year's time. Although they may come from different backgrounds and abilities, ALL students are held to the same high objectives. As such, they need every opportunity available to help them succeed!

My Project

Since writing was one of the greater weaknesses of our students, there was a school-wide initiative last year to move writing formats into the Toulmin Model of Argumentation. Through this change we have seen growth in our students' writing. Now we must ramp up instruction to foster even more improvement. This will happen through student engagement and direct feedback - exactly the opportunity a document camera will provide! This document camera will allow students to receive direct instruction and feedback on writing. Additionally, peer and self critique is an essential component to the learning process; therefore, the document camera will allow students to practice these skills through analysis of writing. With this advanced technology, my students will sharpen editing and revising skills while being engaged in a quick-paced lesson.

With this document camera, I will be able to instantly project student work onto the Smart board, thus allowing them to peer edit, analyze, and revise their writing immediately.

Students will have constant reinforcement that writing is a process, and then have the ability to practice this process. I understand how essential writing skills will be for their future success, and this technology is key to affording them more opportunities to enhance their written skills!
