The Optics of a Physics Pirate

My students need supplies, such as scissors, protractors and meter sticks, to study and analyze optics: how light rays travel through lenses, from mirrors and through diffraction grating.

My Students

Physics Pirates need to be able to view, see and realize the curious things and events around them.

Yes, my students would like to think they are Physics Pirates....and so would I.

We have good imaginations. My students are inner-city students who are commonly from single-parent homes and receive monthly government checks. Our school is an optional school. We teach children who are distinctly college track and drive from different parts of our city and those who are from the local neighborhood.

My Project

With the diffraction grating and scissors, we will use paper towel cores (which they bring) and a few other supplies to make spectroscopes. Students will be able to build their own spectroscope which will break any light source into its component spectrum. These go home with the students. The protractors, rulers and compasses will be used to draw optics ray diagrams so that the student can understand how light travels through lenses and bounce off mirrors.

The optics drawings and the spectroscope building labs are quite time consuming and go much easier with the proper materials available.

Study of optics and light phenomena supports the curriculum for Physics.
