My Students

I teach students who want to attend elite universities.

Sadly, they come from under-resourced communities.

They attend an inner-city charter school, and most come from poor and working-class neighborhoods. Regardless, their lack of financial resources has not dampened their ambitions or performance. I teach 8th grade, and most of the students read at the 8th grade level. Some students, however, read 2-5 grade levels above the 8th grade, and they need to be challenged further.

My Project

The Grapes of Wrath will challenge our upper level students. We plan to give it to our top performers as an advanced assignment during our unit on the Great Depression. In November, students learn about the 1920s and 30s so that they can write a research essay about the depression.

We will assign Steinbeck's novel to our highest achievers in addition to this research essay.

These top performers need the extra challenge to continue to grow as readers and thinkers. By funding this project, you will help us challenge those middle school students who already read at the high school or college level.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
