My students need to increase literacy skills, as well as learn history and citizenship content. Students will also be inspired to stand up for rights of the vulnerable.

This class loves to learn! Some students remark they don't want to go home at the end of the day, and one young lady asks almost every morning as she walks in, "What are we learning today?" Only one student is reading at a third-grade level, so we need materials to build skills.
Transform the education of inner-city students!
Every year, my students are fascinated by the stories of Ruby Bridges and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Building on their interest, this unit will allow students to conduct inquiry projects which fosters rigorous, "sticky" learning. My students are mostly trying to catch up to grade level learning, so this project would greatly benefit our learners.
Changing Worlds’ mission is to foster inclusive communities through oral history, writing and art programs that improve student learning, affirm identity and enhance cross-cultural understanding. The Arts, Cultural and Literacy Connections (ACL) program is designed for in-class participation of the classroom teacher(s) selected to participate with an artist and a literacy specialist to plan and develop a project-based learning experience that allows student to build art skills, improve their writing capacity and develop a greater sense of who they are. This program integrates cultural, family and community histories with writing and the arts to help participants explore their own backgrounds while strengthening their academic and arts learning skills,
A three-year Loyola University study that demonstrated Changing Worlds students showed improvement in writing of over 10 points after using their Arts,Culture and Literacy approach!
