My students need 4 Apple iPod nano digital players to read and comprehend what they read.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember when you were one of the only ones in the classroom that had a difficult time understanding what you were reading? Some of my students experience this on a daily basis. It is my job to do what I can to help them change this.
Remember the days when there was a specific time for doing homework, for reading a novel before bedtime, or when kids knew the name of their favorite author?
My students live in a situation of extreme poverty where the majority of them come to school for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They do not have enough money to purchase school supplies, much less novels to help them grow.
It is my intent to hook them onto reading, so much so that they will read when they don't have to - just for fun. We all know how reading is the key to success. Even though I am a math/algebra teacher I see the importance of reading. Reading is used in all subjects - even math. I notice that my avid readers are able to grasp and make sense of the word problems I give them. They are the individuals that can interpret what is being asked of them. I want to reach the students who are not able to understand what they are reading. By getting 4 apple nano's I will be able to help those who don't understand; enabling them to increase their interest in reading. Some schools have attempted to use this device with great success, claiming that, after time, the students using nano's are reading on their own, without the use of these devices.
The dream I have is to touch each and every student in any way I can; doing whatever I can to get there.
The dream many of them have is to be normal, accepted by their peers, and not to feel left out. I believe these will help do just that. This will indeed make a difference in their future educational career! You will, as many of you already have, make that difference!
