My students need the iPad mini tablets, permanent markers, and poster board to plan, create, record, and edit their equation project.

Have you ever wondered why are there letters in math? Well that's how my 6th grade students feel when I introduce algebra to them. I want to immerse them in all things algebra by giving them an opportunity to create plays, music videos, or puppet shows to show their understanding of equations.
We all know that equations are mastered when students are able to reason abstractly and quantitatively, but what's even better is when they can connect and relate ideals among other content areas.
The Equation Project will give my students a deeper understanding of equations, why performing inverse operations solves equations, and how are equations used in the real world. For the first activity, students will learn and memorize vocabulary words by playing Quizlet and online games on the iPads related to equations. Secondly, students will complete an error analysis assignment by participating in a gallery walk analyzing real world problems posted throughout the classroom. The final product options are not limited to: digital story, puppet show, music video, poems or short story, dance routine, or cheer about equations. The digital story must show pictures, videos, background music, and words. No more than 3 students will work in a group creating their final product.
The classroom environment will look like a hodgepodge of different activities. Students will be working in the classrooms, hallways, and in the school's gardens to create their videos and plays. The iPads will be used in two ways for the project. First, they will use the iPads to practice their vocabulary words and play online equation games to increase their math learning. Then, they will use the iPads to research, create, design and edit their final product. The poster boards will use for the gallery walk and to make cue cards for plays, puppet shows, and digital stories. The Sharpies will be used to create cue cards for the play. I selected the iPads because students love to use technology in the classroom, therefore they will be engaged throughout the project, focused on doing their best. They can record their ideas and find free online background music. I selected poster boards and Sharpies for the students to make cue cards to help create a professional video or play.
The added value of this project in my classroom is immeasurable.
My students’ educational experience will be engaging, exciting, and fun. By middle school, most students either love or fear math, therefore I want to make sure I keep it fun and engaging, continuing their love and changing their fear.
