My Students

Temperature, wind speed, and air pressure....oh my, those words can confuse our 4th graders. They understand basic temperature, but highs and lows, humidity, dew, heat index, etc. don't mean much to them. I would like a weather station to make the study of weather a daily and engaging activity.

I currently have 28 lively students from a middle class neighborhood.

All three 4th grade classes at our school study science together. They love science, but lack confidence in their ability to understand our state core requirements. Some students memorize for the test, but can't apply it.

My Project

Having a weather station and engaging students in daily study of weather will help them apply their science knowledge. Science is more than memorizing facts for a test. It is using the knowledge we have in practical and meaningful ways. We will be able to record the weather station information daily and then discuss the data. Students will identify patterns and infer relationships between factors such as wind and weather change. The weather bingo is included for a fun review of what they are learning hands on.

It is important for children to gain an understanding of the weather because of the profound affect that is has on our everyday lives.

Having a weather station in our school will make the weather more real for all of us. Our weather curriculum can be hands-on.
