My students need multiple copies of a variety of teen book titles, to increase the reading level of our classroom library. Close to 100 books will increase growing teen readers' access to high quality literature.
My multi-use classroom has to change from ELA to Math to Art throughout a busy day. Increasing access to quality reading material will help students become stronger more confident readers by the end of the year. The biggest challenge for our small school is getting multiple copies of quality books.
Students are at my school for a range of reasons including, but not limited to, post traumatic stress disorder, emotional and behavioral disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or specific learning disabilities that impact their ability to take part in the general education classroom.
Many of our students are also involved with social services or the legal system. These students are attempting to complete high school and receive a diploma. This is a huge step for many of them.
It is the goal of the school to support our teens in an educational and therapeutic environment so that they can enter community college or the work force after successful completion of our program. Some of our students will even return to the general education high school. In our district, the drop out rate for my students is staggering. More than 26% of our ELL students, 19% of our students with disabilities, 14% of our low income students, and 14% of our high need students will drop out.
My Project
My students need multiple copies of a variety of teen book titles, to increase the reading level of our classroom library. Close to 100 books will increase growing teen readers' access to high quality literature. The books requested will allow each student to have their own copy of the reading material! Students will reach into imaginary worlds while increasing their vocabulary in books like "The Underwood See." They will search the mind of Mary Shelley and be chilled by Edgar Allen Poe. Teens can picture the days of early aviation in "Airfield" or become obsessed with famous last words in "Looking for Alaska."
My hard to reach teens will explore fiction and history though a range of literature to get them excited about literature.
As we build our classroom library, students feel more invested and proud of the resourcefulness and commitment of their teacher.
As teenagers, they want to have choices and control; by increasing the classroom library, we are able to give students more high quality reading options.
