My Students

Imagine a group of 26 students all wanting to use one of four computers in the classroom to complete a story or project, work on a language program, or practice math skills. All of my students would benefit from the use of this technology. Who do I choose?

I currently a 4th grade teacher at a public school in Massachusetts.

Each year I am challenged to meet the needs of this diverse community. Last year I worked in an Inclusion/ESL classroom. It was definitely challenging meeting the needs of each and every child in my classroom. I did find that the students responded positively to technology in the classroom. I was fortunate to have access to an Eno Board. Students who struggled with understanding the language or had difficulty focusing or grasping concepts truly benefited from this visual medium. My use with the Eno board exposed students to PowerPoint and Smartboard technology and many students wanted to complete their own. However, this was difficult due to the fact that we only had four classroom computers and limited access to a computer lab.

My Project

My classroom currently has four desktop computers. I feel fortunate to have computers for student use in the classroom and I have chosen to bring in my own laptop in order for the students to be able to use all four. However, when doing group work, I am unable to put a group of students at the computer to practice skills using online programs such as Fasttmath or Imagine Learning. I also have found it difficult to find time for students to work on research or complete writing assignments on the computer. In order to have a computer center, I would need access to six to eight computers. Last year, I had 26 students and I found that they were constantly fighting to find time on the computer. All of my students would have benefited from the use of this technology.

I am hoping to attain additional laptop computers in my classroom so that more students can have the opportunity to work on academic skills using computer programs.

I also want them to be able to work on projects using the computer as I find they are more focused on the research and are excited to show a polished finished project such as a PowerPoint. I strongly believe that students in the 21st century need to become competent with technology and use it to enhance their learning.
