Technology to Help Save the Planet

My students need a laptop computer and a spare battery for it, to collect data on water samples to complete an environmental water study in our community, teaching environmental responsibility.

My Students

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink! This phrase from a classic tale of old still holds true to this day. Much of the water that we have is not clean enough to safely consume. This is an incredible problem in our environment. Water purity is of the utmost importance.

I teach science in a small, rural, high poverty high school in central Georgia.

My students are ambitious, intelligent and driven. They have very bright futures ahead of them but they require that extra push. They need someone to reassure them that they can and they will succeed. My students face tremendous obstacles on a daily basis. Many of them don't know if they'll have a roof over their heads when they get home from school. Most of them only receive a full, balanced meal at school. Even with these terrible circumstances, my students are some of the best and brightest in the school. They strive to be the best that they can be. Many of my students are only exposed to technology at school. They don't have the luxury of their own laptop or even Internet access at home.

My Project

Recently, our local newspaper printed an article about the water quality of our local water supply. Apparently, there has been some type of drainage runoff that has contaminated a portion of our water supply. I would like to turn this event into a teachable moment. I would like for my students to do a water quality study of various water supplies. We have the equipment to gather the data, but we need the technology to compile it. This data will allow my students to understand what dangers we face by drinking contaminated water and exactly what our risk is to have water contamination. By adding this laptop computer, we will be able to hook our Logger Pro up and collect data in the field. We will be able to compile our results efficiently and effectively. After compiling our results, we'll be able to create graphs that we can share with our local extension office and municipal water manager. This will help make science real for my students.

This project will allow my students to get a real-life science lesson. By adding this technology, we will have the opportunity to work like professional scientists. This could be the impetus that my students need to further their career in a science based field. We thank you for your consideration and support.
