My Students

No two learners are alike . . . That is so true in our classroom. Technology provides a marvelous opportunity to meet the needs of diverse learners and to engage even the most reluctant learner.

Pinckney is a small, rural/suburban town in southeastern Michigan.

Due to the sad state of the economy in Michigan right now, many of our students are at risk, and dollars coming into public education are few and far between. My classroom is a wonderful, safe, dynamic first grade environment. I am proud to teach 26 fabulous young learners--15 boisterous boys and 11 gregarious girls!

My Project

Research has proved that listening to fluent reading while following written text can directly enhance reading fluency (Rasinski, T.V. (1990). Effects of repeated reading and listening-while-reading on reading fluency. Journal of Educational Research, 83, 147-150). My students need eight headphones and a storage center to keep them, in order to build fluency skills by listening to reading. We currently use 3 computers (2 old dinosaurs rescued from obscurity, and one wonderful iMac purchased by our amazingly generous PTO), an iPad (we are fortunate to be part of a grant-funded pilot program), and 4 mp3 players (purchased with my own personal monies) in our classroom. Unfortunately, we cannot use these wonderful technological resources to their utmost potential because we do not have headphones to fit our little ears.

It is my hope to use technology more and more in the classroom to meet the needs of all my learners (no matter where they "ring in" on the bell curve).
