This year I hope to improve the use of technology in my classroom, by making it more accessible and easy for my students to use, especially since they are 5 and 6! The addition of this Donors Choose project will help make this possible in my classroom!
My classroom is made of 18 young minds, eager to learn and explore at all different levels.
Some of these students use technology everyday, while others have never touched an ipad, iphone or computer. By 3rd or 4th grade all students are using technology regularly to research and complete their school work. Kindergarten is where students need to learn how to safely use and take care the different pieces of technology the school can provide them with. My hope this year is to add 1-2 new ipads to our classroom to ensure that students are able to use their own ipads during small group centers.
My Project
Each year technology plays a bigger role in our day than it did in the previous year. If you were to take a snapshot of my classroom at this time you would see 4 groups of 5 children actively engaged in different activities around the room while I work with another group of students. One of these activities would be the "Technology Center". Students use ipads and computers during center time to access books, math games and literacy games on their level to meet their individual academic needs. By adding one more ipad to my Technology Center, students in small groups would have their own ipad to access materials that are on their level, instead of sharing the ipad with another student. This allows me the ability to differentiate the center to the specific needs of each student.
I currently have 3 ipads and 2 older, much slower desktop computers.
The addition of the ipad mini, which is easier for students to use independently than the desktops, would make it possible to have 1 ipad to 1 student, which would ultimately help students become more independent while I work with other small groups. In addition, students would be able to access games and books specific to their level without having to share with another student.
