Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are struggling readers who have been retained and are older than most kids their age. They have struggled with reading since they were little. They live in a rural area and spend their evenings helping out in the fields. This could be the project that gives them hope of more.

My students are seventh graders who range in age from 12-15.

They have been placed in remedial classes because of their scores on the state assessment. They know they have failed the test and because of that they are lacking confidence in their abilities. They are amazing kids who are so very talented, creative, and hard working. My school is a Title 1 school in the middle of a small town. The district itself only has 7 schools. It is the only Middle School for the district and houses 1400 students. The population of the school is 65% Hispanic. These students are the often the first generation to attend school, and often the only member of the family to speak English.

My Project

I am requesting tablets, ink, and paper. I plan on letting the students create a literary newspaper to showcase their written and artistic works. The idea behind the project is to give the students a creative outlet to showcase their talents. It is my hope through the process of creation they gain confidence in their own abilities. The students will use the tablets to capture written work, art work, and pictures. We will take these images and transform them with the printer, ink, and paper into a newspaper to share with the school and the community. The tablet would also store a digital copy which would allow it to be uploaded on the web to be shared via the Internet. Besides sharing their talents with the world, the project will also help the students to become better writers, creators, thinkers, and photographers.

This project will give the students confidence.

The confidence will transfer over to testing. I believe if the students begin to believe in themselves again they will improve academically. The confidence will also help some of the older students stay in school and work towards a goal. The project will also improve attendance because the students will want to be actively involved in school.
