Mrs. Mann from San Ramon CA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Teaching the Holocaust Through Narrative

My students need to study the people who lived through the Holocaust in a way that it hasn't been taught to them before. They can do this by reading The Book Thief.

My Students

"I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.” This is exactly what I want my students to explore by reading.

I have taught at five different high schools and never have I encountered a group of students so capable of doing the things that we has teachers hope for their futures.

These students are articulate, driven, and bright. We have the unique situation of having students who come upper middle class families alongside students who live in government subsidized housing. Along with diverse socio-economic backgrounds, my students also come from all over the world with many first and second generation students encountering American high schools for the first time.

My Project

We are requesting copies of The Book Thief so they can study the people who lived through the Holocaust in a way that it hasn't been taught to them before. Because of having so many first and second generation Americans, many of my students are actually less familiar with particular historical eras. It is my hope that through increased access to new books that we will be able to discuss issues that will broaden their world view and give them greater tools as writers and thinkers.

Exposure to new books gives students a new lens to view the world.

It would give us a chance to update the normal reading list to books that are more applicable to their lives and create a new generation of readers.
