My Students

Using robots, computer programming, team work, and competition to teach science, technology, engineering, and math is the wave of the future.

"A picture is worth a thousand words." Our under-privileged students work with Vex robots incorporating math, science, and engineering to complete simple to complex missions.

The starter kit will give us one robot for the classroom, and the competition field will allow students to compete with each other. The students are in my advanced computer class. They have already spent one semester with me learning basic computer skills. All the students come from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and they all qualify for the federal free meal program.

My Project

Every teacher knows that hands-on learning is a very effective teaching tool. This robotic project is 100% hands-on. Students work in teams to solve simple problems using Vex robots. I am requesting one starter kit and a competition field for this project. The students will build a robot depending on what the mission's objective is. They will also have to program the robot to run autonomously to achieve the objective. For example, one of the robot's missions is to use the light sensor and have the robot follow a black line making left and right turns following a maze that leads the robot to a tall tower. At the tower, the robot is to raise it's arm and eject a ball into a basket. Sounds fun?...yes it is! This project incorporates Math, Science, and Engineering using the hands-on approach.

The project allows the students to put away their academic books and use their creativity and team work to have fun and compete using their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
