"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." Dance is an art form that can reach, inspire, and positively affect the lives of ALL students.
The mission/vision at our school states that "all students can learn".
This is one of the foundational pillars embedded deeply in the special education and dance departments at our school. Working in partnership with Miss "O", the dance teacher at our designated low-income college preparatory high school, it is our job to inspire and connect people through dance movement. The dance program at our high school seeks to reach out and move with all students, including students with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. While the dance program has hosted a multitude of students with disabilities in their daily dance classes, we have not created a dance piece much less brought in a community choreographer specifically designed for a classroom of students with special needs. Our school has been gifted with a great population of students with severe physical and intellectual disabilities and their love of dance and music has inspired this project.
My Project
When given the resources and opportunity, we truly believe that these students can truly "bring the house down" when they move!
One of the local dance studios in our area does a significant amount of outreach in the dance classroom. I have asked Mr. Spencer John Powell, owner and choreographer, to create a dance work specifically for students with special needs. His teaching background not only includes teaching in the classroom and the studio, but he has experience in working with student populations that require special needs. Mr. Powell's energy is both infectious and inspiring!
The dance that he will choreograph will be taught to all of the students in my class and each will be featured during our 2013 Winter Dance Concert in the school's brand new performing arts facility. My students will be so proud to share what they have learned and share their love of dance with our entire high school in this amazing space, and hopefully inspire other students to do what they love.
This project is incredibly important to me, Miss O, my students and the local community because we want to share dance movement, the philosophy of inclusion, and connect with others through dance.
