My Students

Multimedia technology has the ability to get students and teachers engaged in thoughtful projects, but sometimes the technology encourages us to remain glued to one spot and focused on a screen. I need my students up and active as they present to the class.

Our charter school sits at the center of an urban redevelopment project in Indianapolis.

We are one of only a handful of high school level accelerated schools in the nation. Our students come from all corners of the county for our college preparatory program, and no student is turned away. Our mission is to provide a rigorous college preparatory curriculum for all our students, regardless of their previous school experience. When our students graduate, they have a year of college credits and a letter of acceptance from a major university. I teach the 11th and 12th grade English classes, for which my students earn college credit if they pass with an A or a B.

My Project

When my students reach the 11th and 12th grade, they are in the Early College program. They take college classes, and they are expected to write and produce presentations at a college level. My students are expected to write academically rigorous papers and make presentations that demonstrate their fluency in a wide variety of courses. PowerPoint has proved to be engaging way for my students to compose their thoughts, but they are often stuck close to the computer-- unable to move about the class or interact with their classmates. As the teacher, I suffer from this as well. Presence is a major part of classroom management and engagement. Students and teachers need to be in control of the classroom and the accompanying technology-- not the other way around. The presentation remote controls will allow students and teachers to control the space and technology in all four of our classrooms. Students will be expected to interact with each other as they make their presentations.

The right piece of technology at the right time can make a huge difference in what students can accomplish.

The more our students write and speak, the stronger they become. You can help them get the practice they need with public speaking and interactive presentations. Your support will help them connect to their audience in ways that are more substantial than passively staring at a screen.
