Take Home Readers, Relationships, Rigor, and Relevance
My students need 19 sets of appropriately leveled readers, such as Word Family Readers Set, First Little Readers Parent Pack Levels A-C, and Curious George Curious About Phonics, to help build reading fluency and comprehension at home as well as in the classroom.
"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away. And in its place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall." ~Roald Dahl. In this day and time, it is imperative to encourage and inspire children to use their imaginations and READ instead of going home and plugging in!
My amazing group of children attend a rather large Title 1 school in South Carolina.
Our school strives to deliver a STEAM-based approach to learning with the ultimate goal of creating 21st Century learners and global citizens. Our first grade motto is "Today a READER...Tomorrow a LEADER!" My first graders come from a wide variety of backgrounds with over half being school-dependent. I'm proud to say that this doesn't put a damper on their spark for learning! These kiddos come to school each day ready to learn and eager for knowledge. My personal mission is to make each day a learning experience to remember while also fostering a classroom community built on love, literacy, and laughter. I would love to expand on this goal by providing quality appropriate materials for them to continue learning at home.
My Project
Did you know that out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that even 15 minutes a day of independent reading can expose students to more than a million words of text in a year? ONE MILLION WORDS! While this statistic supports implementing a strong home-based reading program, families are often unable to provide their children with the essential component, appropriately leveled books. This is where you come in! The only material I have requested in this project is books. Lots and lots of books... 274 books-to be exact! My students need 19 sets of appropriately leveled readers, such as Word Family Readers Set, First Little Readers Parent Pack Levels A-C, and Curious George Curious About Phonics, to help build reading fluency and comprehension at home as well as in the classroom. By donating and helping purchase these books for our classroom, you will supply rotating take-home-readers for every single child. This take-home-reading program will provide essential fluency and comprehension practice as well as help build strong home-school partnerships.
Like every teacher on the planet, my students are my passion!
Unfortunately, we can't always afford the materials that provide the level of instruction our children deserve. Each time people like you donate even $1, you give my students another chance to succeed. The foundation for becoming a life-long learner is laid in the primary grades, and, for my students, that crucial time is NOW. Thank you for considering making a donation. My precious first graders promise you won't regret it!
