Welcome to Mrs. Spruiell's class. We learn best by using innovative instructional strategies to individualize student instruction. We are a lab classroom in which teachers from all over the state come to learn how to improve their instruction. Technology is a huge part of our innovation.
Our school is in Gwinnett County, Ga, which is part of the Atlanta metro area.
Our school has a diverse student population in a suburban setting. Roughly, we are 25% each African American, Asian, Caucasian, and Hispanic. Although, many of our students receive free and reduced lunches, we are not a Title I school. Therefore, we depend on our PTA to support many of the "extras" available to our students. Our teachers also spend a lot of their own money on the students.
We are one of the last schools in out district to become retrofitted for technology updates. We just recently became wireless with the availability of "Bring Your Own Device" to school. As a teacher, my goal is to make technology more available to my students, so I can offer even more individualized instruction.
My Project
In our classroom, we learn using the workshop model. We have Reader's Workshop in which we participate in Guided Reading designed to meet students' needs based on reading levels and readiness.
We are one of the only Full Commitment Guided Math classrooms in the school where flexible guided math groups are used daily to individualize math instruction in multiple levels. We are also a guided math lab classroom in which teachers visit to better learn how to teach guided math.
We also use the Write to Learn Program in Writer's Workshop. Students use the program to input their writing for immediate feedback that leads to improvement. Technology is essential for this program.
Last year, I was able to reserve some of our laptops to use in the classroom.
This year, the laptops have been dispersed, so I have lost my technology center. The acquisition of these four tablets, allows me to offer the technology center again. This center is absolutely essential for Reader's, Writer's, and Math workshop.
