My students need a tablet for class to help us document their work, look up inspiration on the fly, make art, and use apps to help with translations, etc.
Students enter my class happy, whenever they come to my class they know: the environment is relaxing, they're able to explore their feelings, stories, and creativity, and they'll play and learn with new materials all the time. A student told me before "when I come here I feel like I can breathe."
My students are very vibrant young people.
They make huge impressions on all museum tour guides, guest visitors and teachers, and anyone else who meets them throughout the course of the year. I'm always blown away by the strength of my students. They have to deal with so many things that most teenagers would never imagine. Homelessness, abuse, extreme poverty, violence, oppression and discrimination. I'm always blown away by their strength and ability to turn stressful situations into things that inspire and empower them to reach beyond their current status. My school is the school that parents don't want their kids at, it has a bad reputation because of the population it serves. But what the outside world sees vs. what I see are very different. I see kids who are in situations that are less than favorable wake up everyday, come to school positive, let their personalities shine, and work hard to move onto their next step (college, work, etc).
My Project
My students will use the tablet to photograph their artwork and easily upload it to their personal websites, college applications, scholarship applications, or the AP 2D art digital submission page. The keyboard will assist greatly in this process as well. Most do not have the resources at home and have to apply for everything in my classroom, a tablet will make this process much smoother. We will also use it to look up inspiration and references images on the fly. We will also utilize the many apps that are available making our uses for the tablet more than we can imagine at this point. Applications I know would benefit my classroom are: Scannable, to easily scan drawings onto the computer. Class Dojo, to support my schools positive behavior program. Translation apps to help communicate and adapt content easily for my large population of ESOL students. And the many art making apps that are out there. The possibilities are really endless.
This donation will allow me to make my classroom more seamless, things like scanning, going to the computer lab to research, photographing, uploading images, then sending them, all takes a long time.
A tablet allows for me to quickly complete those processes which will allow more time for me to be practicing direct instruction and one-to-one help. My students have a lot of opportunities and I want to make sure my classroom is efficient so I can help them take advantage of them all.
