Sustaining the Kindle Classroom Project

My students need ebooks to grow the Kindle Classroom Project and to keep reading a ton!

My Students

Last year, there were 12 Kindles and 150 ebooks. Now there are 108 Kindles and 388 ebooks. The Kindle Classroom Project has grown remarkably, and that means ninth graders in Oakland and San Francisco are reading more and liking it.

The Kindles keep coming in -- at about 5 to 10 a month -- and so do the books.

But this year, with 108 students all reading at the same time, I'd like to be able to purchase books for students immediately when they request them. If students know that the next book is always just one minute away, then their reading momentum will never fade.

My Project

I'm requesting an Amazon gift card because Amazon does not yet allow teachers to include ebooks directly on DonorsChoose proposals. AKJ Books, another bookseller, does not have a wide range of ebooks for high school students. Besides, it's crucial to have a gift card cash reserve at the ready when students request books. With this gift card, I can listen to which book the student wants and make an immediate purchase. I understand that it will be up to me to keep accurate records for DonorsChoose in the name of integrity and transparency. I have done this successfully once in the past, so there shouldn't be a problem with accountability.

This project will make a huge difference because students will gain more ownership in the book-buying process.

Instead of being dependent on me getting them good books, my students will become more independent -- which means that they'll grow as lifelong readers, even after they leave the Kindle Classroom Project.
