Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What do you do in a makerspace? The simple answer is you make things. Things you are curious about. Things that spring from your imagination... It is wonder-driven..."- Thinkers and Tinkerers. There is NO shortage of curiosity and wonder in my classroom, but there IS a shortage of supplies!

In a Title I school where we serve students from varying levels of poverty who speak up to 30 different languages, DISCOVERY is definitely a universal language!

My students are continuously fascinated by each new discovery, and are often impressed by what they find they can do themselves. I spend my days asking questions, facilitating discovery, and acknowledging accomplishments on a daily, hourly, and even minute by minute basis. I am often the absolute first introduction to school that my students get. They come in ready to learn, and I come in ready to ensure they have what they need to do just that! However, even with stretching my budget as much as possible, there are times where their thirst for knowledge remains unquenched. They deserve to have an area where they can just MAKE. A place where they can use the enthusiasm for learning they already have to engage in projects where they can cooperatively or independently trace a path of critical thinking to an ultimate discovery!

My Project

Makerspaces are designed for creation, invention and collaborative learning. On the Pre-K level, this means my students will have the time to plan, experiment and create using genuine tools and materials they would not normally have access to- in a safe and supportive learning environment. They will have the chance to "get their hands dirty" with woodworking tools, architecture, and even drafting plans. They will be encouraged to think through, draw up, and then build with 3D materials to create items that can help them solve classroom problems. Real wood pieces, nails, hammers and saws will give them the opportunity to make structures to explore properties of bridges and buildings and support the experimental process. The STEM learning kits will give them hands-on experience with trying different solutions to problems to ensure they are expanding their thinking. A white board for drafting plans will give them a chance to visualize the work to support higher critical thinking.

The best way to maximize learning and provide the best education available anywhere is to have rich, meaningful, hands-on experiences.

With the exposure to a makerspace, my students will have the foundations for learning skills set so that they can concentrate on higher level thinking and problem solving they can carry with them throughout school, college, and eventually future careers.
