Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I came from a small town in Upstate NY, I came here to Lake Havasu to teach students that art is more than drawing and painting. I want to give the students relevant skills that they can take well beyond the classroom. My biggest challenge is funding, if given the chance I could offer so much more.
My students are a very culturally diverse group.
My classroom is also an inclusive classroom where we have all skill levels. I even have students who are deaf, physically impaired, and who speak little or no English. This doesn't get them down however, it inspires them. My students like to be challenged. They also love technology. They are very much interested in how they can use the skills I teach them in the future. With the rate that technology is increasing we all have to stay educated on its advances. My school tries to stay technologically advanced. We are a title I school which means that we do not have the resources to supply our students with the best technology. We offer a BYOD (bring your own device) program but not all of the students have a device to bring.
My Project
My students will be able to use color on their ceramic pieces, instead of using clear glaze. They create such amazing pieces and when it comes time to glaze them they seem a little let down, this will enhance their pottery and give them more motivation.
My students will also be able to use the iPad to do artist research and write essays, make prezi and power point presentations based off of what they have learned. They can also use the camera to take photos of their work and upload them to either personal websites or put them into a stop motion animation. I movie will allow them to use green screen techniques which is fascinating to a middle schooler. Having protection on them will allow for them to be safe and well cared for.
Oil Pastels will allow the students to create beautiful painterly drawings and create a wax resist for scratch art.
My students will learn that art is much more than drawing and painting and will feel a sense of pride in their artwork.
Today's teenage culture focuses on a lot of negative things.
I am trying to change the way teenagers can express themselves while giving them a relevant skill to take with them in the future. I teach cross curricular, meaning I give practical application of math (proportions, griding), science (chemical changes in ceramics, mixing, darkroom processing) history (art history), and technology, things they crave. By supporting my project you will be changing my student's lives.
