Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever seen the excitement in a child's face when they learn something new? I'm lucky enough to see that everyday in my first grade classroom. I get to teach my students to love reading. Kids this age love to read things that are true. It is difficult to find non fiction books on their levels.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds.
We are in a small school in Tennessee. I have a large percentage of ELL students in my class. I have students that go home to both parents and quite a few that go home to just mom or just dad. They live in all different kinds of houses from hotel rooms to houses. I'm lucky enough to have my students in Kindergarten and then again in first. They are so excited about learning new things. In Kindergarten, they caught the bug for reading. In first grade, I hope to expand that love of reading by introducing them to some new books.
My Project
Last year I introduced my students to reading and the variety of reasons that we read. This year I hope to expand that love of reading. As I examined my books to get ready for the upcoming school year, I realized that I don't have a sufficient amount of non fiction books that were on their level. Students at this age, love non fiction books. They love to learn more about a variety of subjects. The books that I'm requesting are on a variety of nonfiction topics that are on their reading level. They will be able to read these books and experience success with them.
This project is so important because it will give my students the opportunity to read a variety of books.
The more kids practice reading and develop a love of reading the more successful they will be. While I love to read fiction, in my career and day to day tasks as an adult I read non fiction. My students need the opportunity to learn to read non fiction and love these kinds of books as well.
