My Students

Have you ever read a book and thought, "Gee this deserves an award?" Do you remember a book that took you to places beyond yourself, or a book that made think about life? Please help fill my classroom with books that Missouri librarians, students, and the Newbery committee have found award-worthy.

I teach in a low-income poverty school with a high transiency rate.

Students are in and out of my classroom, sometimes within a matter of days! I want every second they spend in my classroom to mean something to them. I want resources in my classroom to be meaningful, and add to the quality education I attempt to provide to them in the days, weeks, or months they are my students. I have students at a variety of reading levels and with a wide variety of interests, I want to make sure that my classroom library provides for that.

My Project

Every year, the students in Missouri are given the opportunity to read books that have been chosen by Missouri librarians and student selectors as Mark Twain and Truman Award nominees. Students must read the nominees in order to vote for a winner. I have added the 2011-2012 nominees to my list, in order to give my students the opportunity to be a part of deciding what is given their state's award for excellence in literature. I try and provide a classroom library that will help develop and foster a love for reading and provide students the opportunity to borrow books that they can call their own for awhile. I have been building my library since I was a young child. However, my classroom library was recently exposed to water when a tornado broke out my windows and part of the roof above my room. Many of my books were destroyed and need to be replaced in order to continue my mission to provide ample amounts of QUALITY reading material for my students.

I want to inspire a life-long love of literature in my students.

Some of them may not consider themselves readers. However, if they are exposed to a classroom library filled with quality materials, perhaps they will find that ONE book that in the future they will say, "This book made me fall in love with reading." Please help this become a possibility for my students.
