My Students

Technology has changed the world and it has likewise changed the art classroom for my elementary students. I strive to give them all the tools necessary to enhance their art experiences, yet I know that a document camera could revolutionize how I engage them.

Every week I teach 650 students who are eager to learn something new.

I see 27 classes full of smiling, bright faces, ready to change the world. In our North Carolina School, these students come from diverse backgrounds, but their innate curiosity is undeniable. Each and every one of them has already taught me something, and this is only my very first year as an art teacher. I want to change how they see and perceive the world around them. I want to inspire within them a love for art.

My Project

Last week, I began a fun sunflower lesson on Vincent Van Gogh by reading a book entitled Camille and the Sunflowers. Kindergartners sat in a trance as I read the book. When I began to turn the page of the 3 inch book,they wailed, "What about the picture!" Of course with such a tiny book, showing every single of the twenty students the picture took too much time from the art lesson. This is exactly the type of dilemma that a document projector would solve easily. One other instance is a lesson in which I teach students the basics of threading a needle- a task too small to demonstrate to an entire class. If I only had a document projector to create large images of small demonstrations or pictures, I could enhance the learning environment for my students that much more.

I have the unique opportunity in my position as an art teacher to touch, not only a single class of 25-30 students but also the entire student body.

Technology like the document camera is an incredible resource for the art teacher and my students would be so grateful for it!
