My Students

Do you remember cutting into an animal and seeing what real organs look like? I want my students to have that opportunity too.

I have approximately 60 amazing young women in my classes that love learning.

Over 90% of them come from families without a lot of money (receive free and reduced priced lunch) and they and their parents are trying to make sure they have a quality education by sending them to our charter school. We are a diverse school with predominately African American students that live close to the school.

My Project

Last year donors supported my students efforts by donating the money for fetal pigs, that would have died anyway. It was the most memorable thing we did in biology. This year the first question of the year was, "Are we going to get to dissect something?" A lot of the biology standards suggest that students learn about really little things (DNA, cells, molecules) but in order to make that more relevant, it's always engaging to connect it to the bigger things---like their own bodies. They love dissecting and seeing a liver, so they can understand what it meant when someone they knew died of liver cancer. They hold up the heart and say, "How does this work?" It's definitely one of the most engaging things you can do in a biology class and really makes students start to wonder more about their own bodies.

This is an activity that students will both learn a lot from and still remember when they are 70---hopefully this experience will also inspire them to take care of their similar body parts so they all live to be at least 70!
