My Students

The fourteen students in my newspaper class report for the Uinta County Herald each month. This give them the real authentic learning experience of writing and what it can do. They get to learn about all facets of writing each month, while letting the community know about what is going on at EMS.

I have 14 students who are a mixture of boys and girls.

They applied to be in the newspaper class and went through a selection process. We work hard and then celebrate each month when the paper publishes our work. They are typical middle school students who love to experiment with words, pictures and showcasing our school, EMS. For them taking pictures of what life is like on a daily basis is great fun.

My Project

The students have been using cameras that once belonged to the yearbook staff. We were really fortunate to even get cameras at all, unfortunately one died and the other is on its last legs. Students could capture the great events that happen at school so much more vividly if they were to receive these resources. I have requested 5 cameras, SD cards and rechargeable batteries to be able to continue this work with my students. These materials would enable them to get the whole swim team or football team in a photo. The new cameras would enable them to have pictures to choose from when we write and select photos each month. Being able to showcase EMS with great photos would enhance our work together as young writers.

This project is important because it shows the students that the work they are doing is worthwhile and important.

It would also show them that when you work hard and do your very best, people support you. Some students have even talked about journalism as a profession, and we have had guests to answer questions about journalism as a profession. These are conscientious, hard working students who respect equipment and strive to show the community that the youth can contribute in a positive way.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
