My Students

Hurricane Isaac + drafty, historic building = destroyed and damaged materials.

Here in New Orleans both the teachers and the students face many struggles in the process of educating our next generation.

The students at my school live in a very urban and sometimes harsh environment and our school, which is currently undergoing emergency repairs due to damages sustained by Hurricane Isaac, is the refuge for many of our students. Our school is housed in a historical building and was one of the first schools to reopen after Katrina. Many of the students in our school have been with us since the reopening of schools in 2005. Our students also benefit from arts integration as our school is a charter school that focuses on the creative arts and sciences.

My Project

It is important that at certain times throughout the day my students are provided with a distraction free environment as well as kinesthetic and tactile materials for learning. Privacy partitions for each student help ensure that there is a place where students can work at their own pace without distractions from others. Wikki Stix are used in my classroom throughout the curriculum, but mostly as a material in which students can create words in a tactile and fun fashion.

Due to minor damages to our school environment by Hurricane Isaac, the partitions and some reading materials in our classroom were damaged.

We need these materials to return to our basic functioning levels in our highly interactive classroom.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
