Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the teacher librarian (Library Media Specialist) at in a K-3 high-needs public school. Our current enrollment is 400 children with 80% free lunch; 18% English Language Learners; 13% children with special needs.

As a library media specialist I plan lessons which invite collaboration among our special area teachers. This grant will support a collaborative unit with our music teacher. Our students love to listen to, sing to, and move to music.

Integrating music with literature is one way to reach our English as a Second Language Learners, children with special needs, as well as our general education population. The book and companion CDs requested in this grant introduce some of the most outstanding music ever written along with composer biographies and background on the historical period for which they wrote. For example, in Gershwin' Rhapsody in Blue, author Anna Harwell Celenza shares the spirit of the roaring twenties and "Gershwin's realization that music is much like its people -- a great melting pot of sounds, rhythms, and harmonies."

Through this grant you will support a powerful collaborative unit which brings history, music, and story alive for our students. We plan to offer this Unit early in the fall of 2008 with the subsequent goal of a live concert field trip to hear one or more of the musical masterpieces highlighted in these books.
