My Students

How do kids share their hands-on, inquiry experiments with their parents at home? They typically are only able to share their paper work or verbal recall of the experience. With your help, there is a way for them to show more.

My kids are part of a rural, Title 1 elementary school.

The kids work hard and all show passion for learning. Because I teach math and science, I am able to create learning experiences that integrate science, technology, engineering, and math. The students love to collaborate, explore, and share their learning in this setting, but struggle that they can't always show their work to their families at home.

My Project

I want to take the excitement of the classroom and bring it home to the kid's family members. Through an application called SeeSaw, I have set up a digital portfolio that will allow the kids to share their in-class experiments, thinking, and final products with their families. Through this app, the students will be able to take photos, videos, and record their voice. When we are building self-sustaining ecosystems, doing inquiry water experiments, or learning about electrical circuits, the students never get to share this with families because they are group, in-class activities. With the use of this iPad and the digital portfolio piece, the students can take a picture/video of the eco-column, include voice over, and add it to their portfolio. This immediately notifies the family member that their child has added something to their portfolio. I even have two students, whose parents are deaf, that would be able to record themselves sharing their school work in sign language.

Imagine how exciting it will be for a kid to get home from school and his family member greets him with, "I got a notification on my phone that you added something to your portfolio!
