Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Coding and robotics are not for first graders. They can't understand the concepts." Yes, they can! First graders are as capable as any older students when it comes to computer science and coding. Let's not hold back their creativity and innovation. Let's help them rise to the challenge!
My first graders have had some experiences learning coding using the Scratch Jr.
app on the iPad. They get very excited when their code works and the character does what they wanted it to do. Partners work together to solve problems and encourage each other to keep trying when their code is not successful. My students are inquisitive and motivated by the new things they take in daily. They enjoy solving problems and being creative thinkers. We are a Title 1 K-1 primary school with a high percentage of second language learners. We are a low income community with limited resources. Most of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our students love being at school and greet our teachers with smiles and hugs every morning. Even though many of them face hardships at home, they strive to do their best at school.
My Project
During STEM lessons, one of the goals is to foster students in their skill develop in the areas of the 4 Cs: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking. By introducing coding earlier in the school year with Bee Bots, my first graders will have the opportunity to practice all of these skills. The skills are all crucial to becoming not only a successful student, but also a highly qualified member of the workforce in the future. STEM projects, coding, and robotics lessons will help to prepare these young minds for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. I plan to have them work in small groups to program their Bee Bot to carry out a task. In order to accomplish this, students will need to collaborate and communicate with their partners, think critically and problem solve, and be creative in their programming. As the students become proficient at programming their Bee-Bot, they will be able to create more challenging tasks for it to complete.
Not many primary classrooms have robotics and coding resources.
These resources will provide my students with opportunities to foster their curiosity, creativity, and innovation. An added benefit is that my first graders will be completely engaged while using these materials and that will lead to an even deeper understanding of the standards. By introducing robotics and coding, I want my students develop a love of engineering, robotics, and computer coding that will continue to grow.
