"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -Ben Franklin
My students learn the most by being involved, doing project based learning, and having the opportunity to solve problems their way.
My students are capable and highly motivated.
They want to learn. They come to school prepared and excited for the day. It is a difficult challenge to be the motivating teacher they deserve. When I mention STEM or hands-on or project, they really come to life. My goal is to continue to provide those exciting, real world experiences that will encourage them to be lifelong learners.
Our school is the oldest building in the district and at one time housed the entire district K through 12. However, we are also one of the most proactive elementary schools in our district. This year we have taken on a leadership challenge and are helping our students become leaders with the help of the Franklin Covey Leader in Me program. There are many opportunities for the students in our school and I want to provide educational opportunities that will continue to excite and motivate them.
My Project
My students will be using an Engineering is Elementary resource from the National Center for Technological Literacy from the Museum of Science, Boston. The title of the unit is "An Alarming Idea: Designing Alarm Circuits." After reading a book about a girl who helps her father design an alarm for her family's sheep ranch, my students will use their electrical engineering skills to create their own alarm circuit. My students need batteries, light bulbs, and buzzers to complete a STEM project to design an alarm and learn about simple circuits.
The donations for this project will enable each of my forty-four students to have the opportunity to build an electric circuit.
Introducing students to engineering topics at a young age can inspire them to enroll in higher level math and science classes in their future, possibly leading them to careers in science and math.
